Sorry I think I misspoke, yes it goes into the pinion gear, not the cable hosing end. And yes the lip faces out like your last Pic has it. Subject: Re: {Chrysler 300} Transmission Fluid Leak - Part II (Progress)The seal in the picture with your hand ( old and new seal)- the side facing you in the pic goes toward the transmission. Think of that other side like a lip seal, with the lip towards the cable.
Very gently drive that down into the bore of the pinion housing on the cable evenly and cleanly. I used a long skinny deep socket from my 1/4" drive set and a wooden dowel. Bottom it out- this is key- it wants to walk up the cable otherwise.
And yes there is a stop inside that cable end housing that seems really low and is of a smaller diameter than the the seal- you want to get that seal into that cavity and bottomed out so it is a little bit of a tight fit on purpose.
I just did the one on mine and it's sealed up great. Be sure to put a little smear of trans assembly lube or a drop or two of atf on the inner lip and pinion after you clean all the crud from inside the reused pinion gear really well ( mine had ultrafine clutch material grit in it, looked like a moly lube paste that must be totally cleaned out- shot of carbon cleaner and carefully blow dry worked just fine).

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Transmission Fluid Leak - Part II (Progress)--Thanks to Club members for their feedback on my transmission fluid leak. Given feedback, and some cleaning and inspection, I was able to isolate the leak to transmission fluid seeping up into the speedometer cable through the inner speedometer cable gear pinion seal. Now, I need help determining how to install the seal within the pinion gear bore and want to make sure I don’t install it “upside down.”
Some pictures:
Image_1 - new speedometer cable gear inner pinion seal (Part No. 2124328)
Image_2 - assembly gear removed from the transmission held in place by the retainer clip (removed).
Image_3 - old pinion seal removed from the gear in the orientation it was seated within the bore. Note, the seal surface is flat but the flip side has a reveal or “u notch” on the reverse side (see Image_4).
Image_4 - same seal as in Image_3 but showing the reveal or “u notch.”
Image_5 - the old seal (top) and new seal (bottom). I noticed that the inner diameter of the new seal appears to be smaller, and slightly tapered, compared to the old seal.
Image_6 - Fig. 32, pg. 21-48 from my 1962 Factory Service Manual. As noted in (3), it states “Place the new seal on end of cable with lips toward cable, then slide pinion over seal and cable.”
What I really need clarification on is the procedure recommended in Image_6. Are the seal “lips” referring to the side of the seal with the reveal or “u notch?” And does the “lips toward the cable” mean toward the cable that connects up toward the speedometer?
I really appreciate any/all help. I suspect, based on all the above, that the old seal I removed may have been installed “upside down” and, combined with the larger (worn) inner seal diameter, both of these contributed to the transmission fluid leaking up through the speedometer pinion gear inner seal into the cable (and on to my garage floor).
