Was an aluminum block secured to the cam, had a stop and 1/8" or so threaded rods coming in for both sides that allowed you to set the cam position and lock it in. Plock was maybe 1 1/2" by 3" by 3/8", blue anodized. I might still have it somewhere in my garage attic.

I found a patent granted in 2005 for a mechanical variable valve timing upper gear. It is to operate on centrifugal force acting on a pair of pivoting weights similar to the mechanical advance of a distributor. But I don’t see any information that it got produced.
Didn’t some company have a manually adjustable upper timing gear for domestic engines some years ago? You took a separate cover off to access the adjustment it seems like. Of course that wouldn’t really accomplish what we are taking about, an add-on timing set up that automatically adjusts valve timing mechanically for older drag engines.
